Deb Nambiar, a Kiwi-born Australian based in Melbourne, Australia, has always been captivated by the vibrant interplay of colour, shape, and texture. Her lifelong passion for art and design is deeply rooted in sensory exploration and creative expression.

A Journey of Self-Taught Creativity

Deb’s creative journey spans more than 30 years as a self-taught artist. Her early days were spent knitting, crocheting, and sewing, which led to a home-based craft business in the Australian Outback, where she created upcycled fabric items, quilts, and original craft patterns.

Later, Deb’s artistry evolved to include intricate 2D and 3D pieces made from fused silks, which were exhibited and sold in regional Melbourne galleries. Over time, she explored and developed her creativity from a wide range of artistic techniques, including:
• Textile Arts: Quilting, embroidery (Redwork, Hardanger, Stumpwork, Crewelwork, Goldwork), needlepoint, woven tapestry, sewing, and silk fusion.
• Dyeing & Printmaking: Shibori, indigo vat dyeing, natural and synthetic dyeing, and press/etching printmaking.
• Fine Arts: Encaustics, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, pen, and ink.

Deb refined her understanding of colour theory, mark-making, and design principles through workshops, books, and mentorships. Inspired initially by the muted tones, intricate motifs, and repeat patterns of the Arts & Crafts Movement, and in particular William Morris. She eventually found her first design love: mid-century modernism.

Pursuing a Lifelong Dream

With her family now grown, Deb has fully embraced her lifelong dream of becoming a surface pattern designer. She now transitions her love of colour, shape, and texture from different mediums into the digital art world, drawing on decades of artistic exploration and life experience to bring beauty and joy into people’s lives.
